Description

Craving something rich, melty, and dripping with comfort? These French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes are the perfect combination of cozy and crave-worthy. Inspired by the deep, savory flavors of French onion soup, this easy recipe transforms humble ingredients like ground beef, caramelized onions, and provolone cheese into a gooey, mouthwatering sandwich. Whether you’re searching for quick dinner ideas, easy recipes for the family, or a new twist on weeknight comfort food, this dish is your answer. It’s fast, satisfying, and so much better than any Sloppy Joe you had as a kid.

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (85/15 or 90/10)

2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup beef broth

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

4 slices provolone cheese

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

4 brioche buns

Instructions

1. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 20–25 minutes until deeply caramelized.

2. Push onions to the side and add the ground beef. Break it apart and cook until browned and no longer pink.

3. Add minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute until fragrant.

4. Sprinkle flour over the mixture and stir to coat the beef and onions evenly.

5. Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well and let the mixture simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened.

6. Lay provolone slices on top. Cover the skillet and let cheese melt for 2–3 minutes. Stir gently if desired.

7. Toast brioche buns in a dry skillet or oven until golden.

8. Spoon the cheesy beef mixture onto the bottom bun and top with the other half. Serve hot.

Notes

Don’t rush the onions—low heat and patience bring out the best flavor.

Toasting the buns is key to holding up the saucy beef without getting soggy.

You can double the filling and freeze for later—it reheats beautifully.
