Ingredients
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 ¾ cups buttermilk
½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick), melted
Optional: flaky salt or garlic powder for topping
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C). Place the stick of butter in an 8×8-inch baking dish and melt it in the oven. Do not let it brown.
2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar (if using).
3. Add the cold buttermilk and stir just until combined. Dough should be sticky and shaggy.
4. Remove the dish with melted butter from the oven and pour the dough into it. Gently spread dough to edges without mixing with the butter.
5. Score the dough into 9 squares using a knife to help portion later.
6. Bake for 25–28 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean from the center.
7. Cool for 5 minutes before slicing. Serve warm.
Notes
For a savory twist, mix in ½ cup of shredded cheddar or fresh herbs before baking.
Use cold buttermilk to keep the texture fluffy and light.
To double the batch, use a 9×13 dish and extend the baking time by 5–10 minutes.
