Ingredients

  • 1 pound ziti pasta
  • 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 4 cups marinara sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley or basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook ziti in salted water until just under al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, heat olive oil. Brown the ground meat until fully cooked. Drain excess fat.
  4. Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Stir in marinara sauce and let simmer 5–10 minutes. Season to taste.
  5. In a bowl, mix ricotta cheese, egg, half the Parmesan, salt, and optional herbs.
  6. In a large mixing bowl, combine cooked pasta, half the meat sauce, and half the mozzarella.
  7. Layer in a greased 9×13″ dish: pasta mix, dollops of ricotta mixture, more sauce. Repeat.
  8. Top with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan.
  9. Cover with foil and bake 20 minutes.
  10. Remove foil and bake an additional 10–15 minutes until bubbly and golden.
  11. Let rest 10 minutes before serving. Garnish if desired.
