  • Yield: 8-10 Runzas

Description

Runza is a deliciously hearty dish filled with savory beef, vegetables, and wrapped in soft, pillowy dough. This comforting homemade recipe is perfect for a satisfying lunch, dinner, or even a snack. Whether you’re making them fresh or freezing them for later, Runzas are sure to impress with their rich flavor and satisfying texture.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 small onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup carrots, diced
  • 1 cup cabbage, shredded
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: In a bowl, combine flour, yeast, sugar, salt, and warm water. Add melted butter and mix until the dough forms. Knead for 5-7 minutes, then let rise until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  2. Cook the filling: In a skillet, cook ground beef over medium heat until browned. Add onions, carrots, and cabbage, cooking until tender. Season with salt, pepper, and soy sauce (optional). Let the filling cool slightly.
  3. Shape the Runzas: Once the dough has risen, divide it into small portions. Roll each portion into a disc, spoon in the filling, and seal the edges. Place them on a baking sheet.
  4. Bake the Runzas: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the tops with melted butter. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
