Description

Start your morning with a Southern classic—sausage gravy and biscuits! This easy recipe brings together the rich, peppery flavor of creamy sausage gravy poured over fluffy, golden biscuits. Whether you’re planning quick breakfast ideas, hearty dinner ideas, or craving a cozy comfort food recipe, this one fits the bill. Perfect for weekend brunch or a breakfast-for-dinner night, it’s satisfying, budget-friendly, and packed with down-home flavor. One bite and you’ll see why it’s a favorite across generations!

Ingredients

1 pound pork breakfast sausage

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

2 1/2 cups whole milk

1/2 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)

1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1 tablespoon butter (optional, if sausage is lean)

6 biscuits, prepared or homemade

Instructions

1. Place a large skillet over medium heat and add the sausage. Break it up with a spatula and cook until fully browned, about 7–10 minutes. Do not drain the fat.

2. Sprinkle flour evenly over the sausage and stir well to coat. Cook for 1–2 minutes until the flour is golden and fragrant.

3. Slowly pour in the milk while stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Continue to cook and stir for 5–7 minutes until the gravy thickens.

4. Season with salt and plenty of freshly ground black pepper. Let simmer for another 2–3 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

5. While gravy is simmering, prepare biscuits according to package or recipe instructions.

6. Split biscuits and generously ladle sausage gravy over each. Serve hot with extra pepper if desired.

Notes

Use freshly ground black pepper for the best flavor.

If gravy thickens too much while sitting, stir in a splash of milk before serving.

Try maple or spicy sausage to switch up the flavor profile.
