Description

Tennessee Onions are a Southern classic made with thick slices of sweet onions, layered in a baking dish, seasoned, and topped with a rich blend of cheeses and butter. As they bake, the onions soften and caramelize while the cheese forms a gooey, golden crust. It’s the perfect comforting side dish that pairs beautifully with grilled meats, BBQ, or even burgers.

Ingredients

  • 3 large sweet onions (Vidalia recommended)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, sliced
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Peel and slice onions into 1/2-inch thick rings. Separate the rings and arrange them in a greased baking dish.
  3. Season the onions evenly with garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
  4. Distribute butter slices over the top of the onions.
  5. Sprinkle mozzarella, then cheddar, then Parmesan cheese evenly over the onions.
  6. Cover the dish loosely with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  7. Remove the foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes, until cheese is golden and bubbly.
  8. Serve warm.
