Ingredients
2 lbs chicken thighs
3 tbsp soy sauce
3 tbsp hoisin sauce
2 tbsp honey
2 tbsp brown sugar
3 cloves garlic minced
1 tbsp fresh ginger grated
1 tsp Chinese five-spice powder
1 tbsp sesame oil
1 tbsp rice vinegar
1/2 tsp red food coloring optional
2 tbsp green onions chopped
1 tbsp sesame seeds
Instructions
1. In a bowl, mix soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, five-spice powder, sesame oil, and rice vinegar until smooth.
2. Add chicken thighs to the marinade and coat thoroughly. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
3. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking tray with foil. Place a wire rack on top.
4. Arrange marinated chicken on the rack and reserve leftover marinade.
5. Bake for 20 minutes, then baste with marinade.
6. Continue baking for another 15–20 minutes, basting once or twice more.
7. Broil for 3–5 minutes to caramelize the edges.
8. Remove from oven, let rest, then slice or serve whole.
9. Garnish with green onions and sesame seeds before serving.
Notes
Marinate overnight for the deepest flavor and best texture.
Use a wire rack to allow even heat circulation and caramelization.
Watch closely while broiling to avoid burning the glaze.
